SMP Aftercare: How to Look After Your Scalp Micropigmentation

A complete guide to caring for your scalp micropigmentation immediately after treatment and long term, so your results stay looking their best for as long as possible.

Why Aftercare Matters

Scalp micropigmentation delivers its best results when the aftercare instructions are followed carefully. How you look after your scalp in the days following each session directly influences how well the pigment settles, how evenly it heals and how long your results last. The good news is that SMP aftercare is straightforward. There are no complex routines or expensive products involved.

Your practitioner will go through aftercare instructions with you after each session. This guide covers the key points so you know what to expect and what to avoid. If you ever have any questions during the healing process, your practitioner is available to help.

The First 24 Hours After Your Session

The first 24 hours are the most critical period for your SMP. The scalp will be slightly sensitive immediately after treatment and the pigment needs time to begin settling into the skin.

  • Keep your scalp completely dry for the first 24 hours. No washing, no showering over the treated area.
  • Avoid touching or rubbing the scalp with your hands, towels or clothing.
  • Sleep on a clean pillowcase and try to avoid friction on the treated area overnight.
  • Avoid alcohol for the first 24 hours, as it can thin the blood and affect how the skin heals.
  • Do not apply any products, creams or lotions to the scalp unless specifically instructed by your practitioner.

Days 2 to 14: The Healing Period

In the days following your session, the treated area will begin to heal. The pigment may appear slightly darker and more defined immediately after treatment before softening into its settled shade over the following one to two weeks. Some very light flaking or minor redness is normal as the skin heals. Do not pick or scratch at any flaking skin, as this can pull pigment out during the healing process.

During the first two weeks:

  • Avoid swimming. Chlorine and salt water can affect the healing pigment. Avoid pools, hot tubs, the sea and steam rooms.
  • Avoid saunas and steam rooms. Excess heat and moisture can open the pores and cause pigment to migrate.
  • Minimise heavy exercise. Excessive sweating in the first week can affect how the pigment settles. Light walking is fine.
  • Stay out of direct sunlight. UV exposure during healing can cause fading and affect the final result. Wear a hat if you are going outside.
  • Do not apply sun cream to a freshly treated scalp. Wait until the skin has fully healed before applying SPF products to the area.
  • Wash gently when you do shower. After the first 24 hours you can carefully clean the scalp with lukewarm water. Avoid scrubbing or using harsh shampoos on the treated area until it has fully healed.
  • Avoid hair clippers over the treated area. If you normally shave your head, wait until your practitioner advises it is safe to do so.

What Is Normal During the Healing Process?

It is completely normal to experience the following during the healing period:

  • Darker appearance immediately after treatment. The pigment will lighten and soften over the first one to two weeks as the skin heals.
  • Very light flaking or peeling. This is the outer layer of skin renewing naturally. Do not pick at it.
  • Slight redness or sensitivity around the treated area for the first day or two.
  • The appearance of slightly faded pigment after the first week. This is normal and subsequent sessions will build the density back up.

If you experience significant swelling, prolonged redness beyond two or three days, signs of infection or any reaction that concerns you, contact your practitioner immediately.

Long-Term Aftercare: Keeping Your SMP Looking Its Best

Once your treatment is fully healed, ongoing maintenance is minimal. A few simple habits will help protect your investment and extend the life of your results:

  • Use SPF daily. Sun exposure is the main cause of SMP fading over time. Apply an SPF 30 or higher product to the scalp every day when going outdoors, or wear a hat. This single habit makes a bigger difference than anything else.
  • Moisturise the scalp regularly. Keeping the skin hydrated helps maintain the appearance of the pigment. Use a simple, fragrance-free moisturiser. A well-moisturised scalp reflects light better and keeps the SMP looking sharp.
  • Avoid prolonged sun exposure without protection. If you are spending extended time outdoors, reapply your SPF and cover up where possible.
  • Avoid harsh scalp products. Strong exfoliants, chemical peels or alcohol-based toners applied to the scalp can accelerate fading. Keep your routine simple.
  • Book a top-up when needed. Most clients return for a maintenance session every three to five years. By this point the pigment may have faded slightly. A single top-up session restores the treatment to its original appearance.

Aftercare Between Your Initial Sessions

For clients in the middle of their initial treatment course (two to four sessions), the aftercare between sessions follows the same principles as above. Allow each session to fully heal before your next appointment, which is typically spaced seven to fourteen days apart. Your practitioner will advise on the right interval based on how your skin is responding.
