General Questions
What is scalp micropigmentation (SMP)?
Scalp micropigmentation is a non-surgical cosmetic treatment that uses specialised pigments to replicate the appearance of natural hair follicles on the scalp. Fine deposits of pigment are placed into the upper layers of the skin to create the look of a closely shaved head, add the appearance of density to thinning hair or camouflage scarring. It is suitable for both men and women experiencing all types of hair loss.
Does SMP look natural?
Yes, when performed by a skilled and experienced artist. The key to natural-looking SMP is precision: matching the pigment to your skin tone and existing hair colour, placing each impression individually rather than in a uniform pattern, and designing a hairline that suits your facial structure and age. At Elite SMP, we focus on natural, realistic results rather than following trends, so the treatment looks like genuine hair rather than a cosmetic procedure.
How many sessions will I need?
Most SMP treatments are completed over two to four sessions. Multiple sessions allow us to build density gradually, make adjustments and achieve the most natural result. The exact number depends on the area being treated, the level of coverage required and how your skin responds to the pigment. Sessions are typically spaced seven to fourteen days apart to allow proper healing between each one.

How long does each session take?
Session length varies depending on the treatment area and the amount of work required. A typical session lasts between three and six hours. The first session includes the consultation, hairline design and initial pigment application. Subsequent sessions will focus on building density and refining the result.
Is scalp micropigmentation painful?
Most clients describe the sensation as mild discomfort rather than pain, similar to a light scratching feeling on the scalp. Sensitivity varies depending on the area being treated, as some parts of the scalp are more sensitive than others. The vast majority of clients find the treatment very manageable.
How soon will I see results?
Results are visible immediately after your first session. There may be some mild redness which typically settles within twenty-four to forty-eight hours. The pigment may appear slightly darker at first but will soften to its true shade as the skin heals over the following days. The full, finished result is visible once your final session has healed, usually within a week of your last appointment.
How long does SMP last?
SMP is a long-lasting treatment. Most clients can expect results to remain strong for three to five years before the pigment begins to soften and a refresh session may be needed. The exact longevity depends on factors such as your skin type, sun exposure and how closely you follow the aftercare advice. SMP pigments are specifically formulated to fade gradually and naturally rather than changing colour over time.
Will the pigment change colour over time?
Professional-grade SMP pigments, such as the Folicule ink we use at Elite SMP, are formulated to fade naturally without turning blue, green or grey. Over several years, the pigment will soften and lighten gradually. Proper aftercare, including regular use of sun protection on the scalp, helps maintain the appearance for longer. Touch-up sessions are available whenever you feel the pigment needs refreshing.
Can SMP be adjusted later?
Absolutely. One of the advantages of SMP is that it can be refined, adjusted or extended over time. If you want to increase density, extend coverage to a new area or refresh the pigment after a few years, this can all be done. Working with a consistent artist who knows your treatment history makes adjustments smoother and more precise.
Aftercare & Preparation
What is the aftercare for SMP?
Aftercare is straightforward. For the first four to five days after each session, you should avoid washing the treated area, heavy sweating, swimming, saunas and direct sun exposure. After the initial healing period, we recommend using a gentle moisturiser on the scalp and applying SPF when spending time outdoors. Avoiding harsh exfoliants on the scalp will also help preserve the pigment. Full aftercare instructions are provided at your appointment.
Is SMP suitable for women?
Yes. Scalp micropigmentation is an effective treatment for women experiencing hair thinning, widening partings, alopecia or other forms of hair loss. For women, SMP typically focuses on adding density to thinning areas rather than creating a shaved-head look. The treatment works discreetly with longer hairstyles and can make a significant difference to the overall appearance of hair fullness and coverage.
What should I do before my appointment?
If your treatment involves a shaved or closely cropped area, we recommend shaving the area one to two days before your appointment. Avoid alcohol for twenty-four hours beforehand. Stay well hydrated and avoid sunburn on the scalp in the days leading up to your session. Arrive with a clean scalp, free from any products. We will cover everything else during your consultation.
